When in 1985, I, together with George Vella and Tony Lautier started the first Marine Conservation Society to promote the banning of spearfishing with aqualungs and the creations of marine sanctuaries, we were supported by many UK divers. Also giving us a lot of input were the MCS of the UK. One of the things they had mentioned was the efforts that were being made at St.Abbs in Scotland to make this a Voluntary Marine Reserve (VMR).

CIRKEWWA probably has given most of us special memories or moments, whether these be our very first dive as trainees, our first holiday dive ever, the first drop off; hunting little thunny or tuna or amberjacks, or being surrounded by hundreds of barracudas.
For me it has been many of these and I know that once I start recalling the best experience, I will surly find another best.
That is the magic of Cirkewwa!

Our first dive for the weekend is Zurrieq next to Blue Grotto . The wreck Um El Farud is the target (Debbie miss it the last time) and 3-4 buddy pairs set off in search! Mission accomplished as all were found swimming around the wreck happily poking in and out of holes. Debbie is running a marathon keeping up but enjoying the wreck passing by many of the sights to be held on this dive.
120 bars of air left and time to head back to shore leaving the wreck behind heading mid-water back to the reef! On target we hit the reef at 10 meters and slowly head back to Zurrieq in-let. Our eye’s are seeking in all nooks and crannies for an octopus as Debbie has yet to have seen one since she has lived in Malta.
