Scuba Works Malta in collaboration with Sharklab takes part in few research projects related to the sharks in the seas around Malta.
Who are Sharklab ?
Sharklab is a non- profit NGO and was founded by Andrej Gajic and Greg Nowell in 2008 and is an expanding global organisation with researchers based in Bosnia & Herzegovina, South Africa, Malta, United States, Australia, Malaysia, Canada, Kuwait, and the UK.
Each researcher and research team follow the basic principles of research to aid the preservation and conservation of Sharks. This is being done on a global scale, but unlike many other organisations Sharklab does this on a more local level. All research work is sent to our bases in Bosnia and Malta and is used to highlight the plight of Sharks globally in our quarterly published online magazine “Sharks World” as well as features on our website.
The research currently being done includes creating shark maps as well as working on different scientific based works about shark biology & ecology. The main goal being to increase awareness to help protect what are now endangered Apex predators. As part of this work we hope to create global maps of where Sharks are, which species and when. So we can support and pursue pressure globally for more protection.
Sharklab is a member of the Shark Alliance, a coalition of many organisations intent on pursuing better management of Sharks globally. www.sharkalliance.org. Through our membership we hope to increase public awareness and put pressure on governments to change local fisheries legislation and to implement the universally recognised Community Action Plan for Sharks. Sharklab is also a member of several other organisations and partners with others to get the message out that Sharks need our help and they need it now.
Our researchers and members have a wide variety of skills, all of which they use to contribute to Sharklab. Being a voluntary organisation we rely on people giving of their time freely and this makes us unique as many organisations charge subscriptions for members.
Sharklab is expanding and we need more people to contribute and to make a difference. If you have time and enthusiasm to give Sharks a better chance, then we need you. We are hoping that in time Sharklab will have researchers and members in all the countries on this blue planet. Being everywhere we stand a better chance of dealing with the problems that Sharks are facing. Different countries face different problems and we recognise this, finning and overfishing are not the only problems which sharks face. Damage to habitat, nets designed to protect humans all play a part in the demise of Sharks.
Being a member of Sharklab and contributing to our growing organisation will not only be beneficial for Sharks, but will allow you to meet like- minded members, publish your own articles in the magazine and be a place to display your Shark photographs. To make a difference, get involved now!
