Xlendi Tunnelby “He who cannot be named…”

Obviously it being a lovely warm and sunny Sunday in Malta, the scubaworksmalta.com team just had to go diving.

Being July 4th, we just had to make it a ‘High 5 Dive Day’, just because we are like that ;-)

The BSAC divers looked a little (more than normal) bewildered.

So with full cylinders, scrubbers packed (for the rebreather divers), wetsuits (and even a drysuit?!) we duly met up at the Cirkewwa Ferry Terminal.

It was meant to be a dozen or so of us, with 3 on closed circuit, but one rebreather diver pulled out and the Scottish clan had to decline…

So after a quick reshuffle we set off in 3 vehicles for Gozo. Luck was on our side and we got into the fast lane on the ferry.

The plan, yes, we had a plan – not sure which version – was to go to Dwejra (Blue Hole and Inland Sea). Decided that the best part of the Inland Sea was the swim out through the tunnel – to see the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel… and then round to the Blue Hole, passing through (or is it under?) the Azure window. Azure is a posh word for blue – had to use it as blue already taken by the Blue Hole. Apparently…

About a month ago a certain person left a broken watch attached to the fridge at 50m+… so the rebreather divers were on a mission.

It did not even last a month!!! And the thieving sod did not even leave a beer in the fridge ;-(

The tunnel was awesome and there were some huge Dentec (? spelling) [aka big fish!] on the way down to the fridge.

DaveW briefly joined us near the fridge, the other 3 stayed within their recreational limits, but all had a thrilling dive.

Amazingly DaveW had less deco then me! That was a first. I was on a nice Trimix so had a clear memory of the dive. Saw some spectacular snagged fishing lines and a long net trailing off into the depths… Also saw a nice “proper” clawed lobster!

So that was Dive #1.

Off to Xlendi for lunch and then Dive #2.

The pizza at Ta’ Karolina come highly recommended.

Today we all knew the plan – Ta’ Karolina, not the Stone Crab! You have to pass “through” the Stone Crab to get to Ta’ Katrinas (much to the chagrin of the waitresses at the former…).

Today, Tanya of the Bulgarian contingent was going for a dive with David. Now it got a bit confusing as she wanted to dive with David – but there were 3 of us and I am sure she meant me… But DaveW was sure she meant him… The other David was just wondering why he got so cold and wet in his drysuit and if anything else could go wrong.

Oh well, we all got ready and Dragan (the other half of the Bulgarian contingent) offered to lead… No one was going to hold his hand.

DaveW and Tanya did their own thing, holding hands at 7m looking for us all!

Dave, now wearing just his undersuit – he has a very expensive wetsuit. It is a DUI Drysuit. DUI is an acronym for Dry Until Immersed. He now knows why…

He also, apparently, wanted to do an hour long dive with no mask… but I ruined that idea upon finding it resting on the sandy bottom of Xlendi Bay. He tried to make out to Karen that I had hidden it – after he had got her to go all the way back to the car park for it. Ho, hum, I am just going to twiddle my thumbs… And, obviously, not going to tell anyone.

We found the tunnel and a nice big octopus and a torpedo ray, lying very still on the bottom with what looked suspiciously like a spear hole in it!

Very sad.

Another awesome dive with the scubaworksmalta.com team.

We left Xlendi, for the return ferry, after a quick trip to the amazing ice cream parlour. Too fattening for me!

Once again we lucked out on the ferry. Only a short wait and we got the fast lane again.

However this time we decided to have a bit of fun – with the horn!

It certainly got very “musical” with all those horns blowing :-)

Just to prove it is done in good humour, someone honked at us as we pulled over to redistribute the gear for the return trip home.

Oh well, another excellent day. July 4th is so much better in Malta, well, Gozo to be correct!

High 5 until next week…
