Exploring the depths in Gozo

Azure WinsowThe spring is officially here! This is the time when we still dive with the dry suits but is already hot outside. The sea is around 15C and this guarantees that the marine lives is rich and close to the shore.

With this idea in mind we decide to cross the Gozo channel and dive one of the best sites on the archipelago – Dwejra ant the Blue Hole.

The site is under one of the miracles here – Azure Window. This is a natural rock formation just above the blue sea. Unfortunately it won’t last forever so if you want to see it better hurry up with your booking.

So, after a short trip on the ferry crossing the channel we jumped in the cars and rushed to the dive site as we wanted to be one of the first divers there.

The plan was simple. First point of interest was the famous Coral cave. We wanted to explore the large entrance as going in the cave is unofficially protected – the bubbles can be harmful for the corals inside.

As soon as we jumped in the water we discovered that the visibility was around 20 meters. Enough for the purpose of the exercise today. The second point of the dive was me to gain some depth and to do a deco dive.

The cave was nice. One needs a torch to see the corals in their beautiful colors. Then we turned right and disappeared in the blue. At a depth of 40 meters we spent some time and slowly continued close to the wall enjoying the company of a large amberjack and two groupers. The Blue Hole and the cave

After that we swam under the Azure Window. It is amazing to see the window upside down and reflections in to the sea in a sunny day. I’ve checked my computer – so far 7 min of deco left and still pretty much air in the tank for one more cave and the incredible Blue Hole – another natural formation that is usually used for entrance and exit point for the divers.

After 61 minutes under the water I’ve approached the surface and took a fresh breath of air. With a smile on our faces we rushed to the cars knowing that soon we will chill out facing the sea and enjoying the home made food prepared especially for our Sunday dive and picnic… mmmmm nice!

Divers having funnSo let’s recap what you need for a great day of diving on Gozo – 15 liter air tank, torch, experienced guide and bunch of good friends to have a lot of fun with them!
