The winter is here, the water is already 18 degrees and we just got our new dry suits. It never get very cold in Malta and one can still dive with 7mm wet suit but with the amount of dives we do for us Is better to stay dry. Our new suits are neoprene Northern diver from their army range.
During our familiarization with the suits we came up with the ideas and decided to list few tips about the dry suit diving that might be useful for you:
- Get familiar with the suits available on the market. Choose according your needs and the majority of the dive you do. Here in Malta we don’t use arctic suits and we are trying to wear a less as possible under suits.
- Adjust your weight properly. This will help you to enjoy a safe diving and use less air. Try to dive with and without anchor weight so you find the best for you.
- If this is your first dive never go diving without someone who is experienced in dry suit diving and better take a course. Rescue with a dry suit is different. Be careful for the migration of the air.
- Always wear a BCD for back up.
- Put enough air in the dry suit to reduce squeeze but don’t overinflate.
- Learn how to maintain the suit according to the material and the model. Always wash and let to dry (not on direct sun light) after the dive. Check for moisture in the bottom of the boots (use newspapers to absorb the damp).Treat the outside of the zipper with bee’s wax. Only the outside of the zipper should be lubricated and it’s best to do it with the zipper closed. Treat the seals with pure talcum powder.
The subject is very big so maybe there are many other things to add.
What is your experience with dry suit diving? Do you have any special hints to make it safer?
