A splendid weekend

It is 3.30 on Sunday afternoon. We are currently sitting under an umbrella in our garden watching our dive gear slowly drying as it hangs from the orange tree, two glasses of wine on the table in glasses sourced from the summer wine festival at Valletta last night. The crowd from Scubaworks Malta had met up in Hastings Gardens for a glass or two, and to admire the view which it affords over Grand harbour.
Sounds fabulous doesn’t it? It is except that last night we still had to drive home in a car full of dive gear which has done two dives already, and smelled like ….the bottom of the Mediterranean! It’s been in a large tub of water and Milton now.
The weekends diving began on Friday, we had a call from Dragan. Would we like to do a night dive at Cirkewwa? Meet at 9. A good start, lots of life including Moray eels, Octopus, Cuttlefish, Shrimps and a Spanish dancer. The first night dive Debbie and I have done since we have come to live in Malta, we were not disappointed. The dive gear was packed into the car ready for the next day.
Saturday morning 9 o’clock the Scubaworks Malta crew met up in St Elmos bay Valletta for a dive on the Maori. Viz was about 10m seen Morays Cuttlefish and Turbot. The wreck of the Maori is as impressive as ever. Once again the wet gear went back in the boot ready for Sunday, I know we should give it a quick rinse but you how it is, such a social whirl this life in Malta!
Today we met at Ghar Lapsi at 11 o’clock ( a very civilised time). The car now smells like a monkey slept in it, but with the windows open it’s sufferable. There is a nice cave system at Ghar Lapsi to dive through on the way out to the reef. The entry point is from the pool at the bottom of the slipway by the car park.
As we prepared to descend Dragan discovered his DV was entangled so after a few minutes wrestling with his BC and regs he was sorted and we followed the rest of the guys through the cave, to find them reclining on the sand the other side in a very pointed fashion.
The vis was excellent 30m+ a very relaxing dive! Found an Octopus, Flying gurnard, and on a slightly disturbing note a dead Spotted ray and two dead Rockfish.
An hour or so later we were in the cafe at the top of the slipway having lunch and discussing a forthcoming dive to Filfa, which is a small uninhabited island just out to sea from Ghar Lapsi. Today there is no haze in the air the sea is calm so no waves crashing onto it and it looks so crisp, let’s hope it’s like that when we get there!
It’s been a splendid weekend of good diving and good company.
