HMS Maori – a dive in the heart of Malta
By Paul Adams
The guys and gals from Scuba Works Malta suggested we go and dive on the HMS Maori, or what’s left of her. The front section lays in about 18m of water in St Elmos Bay, Valletta. Debbie and I were defiantly up for that! We had all heard there were Seahorses close to the wreck, and wanted to see if we could find these illusive and legendry creatures.
Seven divers turned up on Saturday morning, Two decided to go off in search of ‘treasure’ in the shallow reef, there are lots of old coins and bits of interesting junk which has been tossed in or dropped over the years. Poking about and disturbing the sand also attracts a lot of critters who turn up for lunch prepared by the divers. read more...

With the works limo down and out for the count all heads where banged together for transport for the weekend! Two members come up trumps and found us wheels for the weekend so off we all go then!
Our first dive for the weekend is Zurrieq next to Blue Grotto . The wreck Um El Farud is the target (Debbie miss it the last time) and 3-4 buddy pairs set off in search! Mission accomplished as all were found swimming around the wreck happily poking in and out of holes. Debbie is running a marathon keeping up but enjoying the wreck passing by many of the sights to be held on this dive.
120 bars of air left and time to head back to shore leaving the wreck behind heading mid-water back to the reef! On target we hit the reef at 10 meters and slowly head back to Zurrieq in-let. Our eye’s are seeking in all nooks and crannies for an octopus as Debbie has yet to have seen one since she has lived in Malta. Not happy the small Octopus we found managed to stay with us for the photo Debbie so wanted!! So again mission accomplished all had a great dive and Debbie in 1 dive had seen the wreck and an octopus. read more...

The sea around Malta has been a bit choppy for a week or two, but we braved it down to the Blue Grotto. Not too bad as it turned out.
We have just moved to Malta from the UK and it is wonderful for us to have so much diving right on our doorstep! Also we don’t have to get up at a ridiculous time in the morning to get to a dive site either, yet another bonus! We used to live just about as far away from the sea as you can get in England, a trip to Stoney Cove (140 mile round trip) was our usual weekend dive site. So Zurrieq is extremely exotic to us!
We all met up at 10 o’clock (a most civilised time) with the guys from Scuba Works Malta, our guides for the day. We had dived at the Blue Grotto 18 months ago on a holiday to Malta, we were very new to diving then just qualified as ocean divers. read more...

In the UK only the most addicted and hardy divers would plan a weekend underwater at the end of January. Here in Malta we don’t need to break any ice before we start, and So Scubaworks organised some off-season dives for Saturday and Sunday. The weather forecast was reasonable, but it had been windy all week, and on turning up at Cirkewwa (Malta’s most popular dive site) it quickly became apparent that even if we got in and underwater quickly, we would be faced with possible beaching on very sharp rocks as we tried to get out again, so large was the swell.
No problem – divers always have a plan B, and so we boarded the roll-on roll-off car ferry over to Gozo, Malta’s smaller sister island. read more...
